BUILDING WORK DONE
- The trend estimate of the value of total building work done rose 0.6% in the March 2018 quarter.
- The seasonally adjusted estimate of the value of total building work done rose 0.3% to $28,584.9m in the March quarter, following a rise of 1.0% in the December 2017 quarter.
NEW RESIDENTIAL BUILDING WORK DONE
- The trend estimate of the value of new residential building work done rose 0.4% in the March quarter. The value of work done on new houses rose 1.2%, while new other residential building fell 0.6%.
- The seasonally adjusted estimate of the value of new residential building work done rose 1.8% to $16,288.3m. Work done on new houses rose 2.9% to $8,687.0m, while new other residential building rose 0.7% to $7,601.2m.
NON-RESIDENTIAL WORK DONE
- The trend estimate of the value of non-residential building work done rose 0.9% in the March quarter.
- The seasonally adjusted estimate of the value of non-residential building work done in the quarter fell 3.1%, following a rise of 4.1% in the December 2017 quarter.

TOTAL DWELLINGS
- The trend estimate for the total number of dwelling units commenced rose 1.2% in the March quarter following a rise of 1.8% in the December 2017 quarter.
- The seasonally adjusted estimate for the total number of dwelling units commenced rose 5.2% to 57,112 dwellings in the March quarter following a fall of 2.2% in the December 2017 quarter.
NEW PRIVATE SECTOR HOUSES
- The trend estimate for new private sector house commencements rose 2.0% in the March quarter following a rise of 2.7% in the December quarter.
- The seasonally adjusted estimate for new private sector house commencements rose 3.1% to 30,397 dwellings in the March quarter following a rise of 3.3% in the December quarter.
NEW PRIVATE SECTOR OTHER RESIDENTIAL BUILDING
- The trend estimate for new private sector other residential building commencements rose 0.2% in the March quarter following a rise of 0.7% in the December quarter.
- The seasonally adjusted estimate for new private sector other residential building rose 8.8% to 25,522 dwellings in the March quarter following a fall of 9.1% in the December quarter.

This publication updates the preliminary estimates released in
Construction Work Done, Australia (cat. no. 8755.0) on 23 May 2018. The data in this publication are based on a response rate of approximately 90% of the value of building work done during the quarter. The data are subject to revision when returns from the following quarter are processed. Final data for the March quarter 2018 will be released in the next release of this publication,
Building Activity, Australia (cat. no. 8752.0) on 10 October 2018.
SIGNIFICANT REVISIONS THIS ISSUE
Compared to the estimate published in
Building Activity, Australia December quarter 2017 (cat. no. 8752.0) released on 11 April 2018:
- the total value of work done in Australia during the December quarter 2017 has been revised upwards by $568.9m or 1.9%.
- the total value of work commenced in Australia during the December quarter 2017 has been revised upwards by $1,970.5m or 6.9%. This was driven by a 12.0% ($1,160.2m) revision to non-residential commencements and a 4.3% ($810.4m) revision to residential commencements.
- the number of dwelling unit commencements in the December quarter 2017 has been revised upwards by 1,460 dwellings or 2.7%.
DATA NOTE
Several time series spreadsheets contain 'np' (not available for publication) annotations from the September quarter 2012 onwards. This is due to confidential data being contained in these series.
For the March Building Activity release each year, the ABS publishes revisions that have been made to Building Activity data prior to the December quarter. In this release, revisions have been provided for the time period from September 2012 to September 2017. A
